Asia Port Congestion Update for Week 35

ASIA PORT & CONGESTION UPDATE

Week 35 | 2026

OVERVIEW

Port operations across Asia remain highly dynamic, with Typhoon SAUDEL causing significant disruption across parts of China and Japan. Several major ports have experienced closures, evacuation of vessels and suspension of yard operations, with congestion expected to persist as delayed vessels and cargo return to the network.

The most significant congestion continues to be concentrated across Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian and Hong Kong, while conditions in Singapore have stabilised.

KEY DEVELOPMENTS

  • Typhoon SAUDEL has caused significant disruption across Fuzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai and several Japanese ports.
  • Ningbo: Yard utilisation remains extremely high at 92-95%, with plug utilisation at 94%. Waiting times are expected to increase to 5-6 days following the port reopening.
  • Shanghai: WGQ and YS terminals have been impacted by the typhoon, with waiting times expected to reach 9+ days at WGQ2 and WGQ5 following reopening.
  • Yantian: Significant congestion continues, with mega vessels experiencing 5-6 days' waiting and smaller vessels approximately 3-5 days.
  • Hong Kong: Congestion remains due to vessel bunching, port omissions and diversions. HIT is experiencing approximately 2 days' waiting, with yard utilisation above 85%.
  • Japan: Typhoon SAUDEL has resulted in prolonged port closures at Hakata and Shibushi, while Yokohama is experiencing high yard utilisation of 90-95%.
  • Busan: Berth congestion remains at BNCT, with waiting/delays of approximately 1.5-2 days and high CMA transhipment inventory.
  • Manila: Congestion continues at both North and South ports, with waiting times of 2-3 days at Manila North and 3+ days at Manila South.
  • Singapore: Conditions have improved, with most carriers experiencing approximately 1-1.5 days' waiting.
  • Vietnam: Northern Vietnam remains stable, while Cat Lai continues to experience minor congestion and high yard utilisation.
  • Malaysia: Port Klang remains relatively stable, although yard density at WSP remains high at 85-90%.

PORT CONDITIONS BY REGION

BANGLADESH

Chittagong (BDCGP)

  • Yard utilisation approximately 70%.
  • Berth waiting time currently 1-2 days for both geared and gearless vessels.

CHINA

Fuzhou (CNFUG)

  • Port closed since 25 August at 1200 due to Typhoon SAUDEL.

Ningbo (CNNGB)

  • Typhoon warning raised from 25 August at 2000.
  • All vessels alongside were evacuated from 26 August at 1800 for shelter.
  • Yard utilisation:
    • MSICT: 95%
    • Other terminals: 92%
  • Plug utilisation: 94%.
  • High yard density across terminals.
  • Waiting times expected to increase to 5-6 days following reopening.

Shanghai (CNSHA)

  • WGQ and YS terminals closed from 26 August at 1200 due to Typhoon SAUDEL.
  • Yard utilisation:
    • WGQ: 76%
    • YS12: 85%
  • WGQ2 waiting time: 9+ days following reopening.
  • WGQ5 waiting time: 9+ days following reopening.
  • YGS12 waiting time: approximately 7+ days following reopening.

Shekou (CNSHK)

  • Waiting time currently 1-1.5 days.
  • Export laden containers are subject to an ETB-7 day gate-in policy.

Qingdao (CNTAO)

  • Port closed for approximately 21 hours on 24 August due to rough seas.
  • Current waiting time approximately 1-1.5 days.
  • Maintenance dredging at QQCTU commenced 19 August and is expected to continue until mid-September.
  • One berth will remain unavailable during the dredging period.

Yantian (CNYTN)

  • Mega vessels: 5-6 days' waiting.
  • Vessels with LOA below 330m: 3-5 days' waiting.
  • Conditions are expected to improve following Golden Week.
  • Export laden containers remain subject to the ETB-7 day gate-in policy.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong (HKHKG)

  • Congestion remains during Week 35 due to vessel delays and bunching.
  • Port omissions and diversions from other ports are adding further pressure.
  • HIT waiting time approximately 2 days.
  • Yard utilisation remains above 85%, impacting terminal efficiency.

INDONESIA

Belawan (IDBLW)

  • Berth congestion continues.
  • Off-window vessels experiencing approximately 1-2 days' waiting.

Jakarta (IDJKT)

  • Minor berth congestion.
  • Average waiting time approximately 1 day.

Semarang (IDSRG)

  • Yard utilisation approximately 60%.

Surabaya (IDSUB)

  • Port conditions remain stable.
  • Most vessels are berthing BOA or experiencing only minor delays of approximately 0.5 day.

JAPAN

Hakata (JPNAH)

  • Port closed for approximately 40 hours from 24-26 August due to Typhoon SAUDEL.
  • Yard operations suspended for approximately 75 hours from 24-27 August.

Shibushi (JPSBS)

  • Port closed for approximately 96 hours from 24-28 August due to Typhoon SAUDEL.

Yokohama (JPYOK)

  • Reduced vessel calls during Week 35 due to delays caused by Typhoon SAUDEL.
  • Yard utilisation remains high at 90-95%.
  • Higher vessel volumes are expected next week, which could place further pressure on terminal capacity.

MALAYSIA

Port Klang (MYPKG)

  • WSP yard utilisation remains high at approximately 85-90%.
  • Average delay approximately 0.5 day.

Tanjung Pelepas (MYTPP)

  • Minor berth congestion.
  • Waiting/delay approximately 0.5-1 day.

PHILIPPINES

Manila (PHMNL)

Manila North:

  • Congestion continues.
  • Off-window vessels experiencing 2-3 days' waiting.
  • Conditions remain dynamic as delayed vessels progressively return from previous ports.

Manila South:

  • Congestion also remains significant.
  • Average waiting time 3+ days.

SINGAPORE

Singapore (SGSIN)

  • Conditions stabilised during Week 35 as berth demand declined.
  • Most carriers experiencing approximately 1-1.5 days' waiting.
  • CMA group vessels experiencing lower waiting times of approximately 0.5 day.

SOUTH KOREA

Busan (KRPUS)

  • BNCT laden yard utilisation approximately 80% as of 27 August.
  • CMA transhipment inventory approximately 18.7k TEU.
  • Berth congestion expected to continue through Weeks 35-36.
  • Waiting/delay approximately 1.5-2 days.
  • Overall conditions remain highly complicated and dynamic.

VIETNAM

Hai Phong (VNHPH)

  • HICT and HHIT remain stable with no major congestion.
  • Yard utilisation approximately 55-65%.

Cat Lai / Ho Chi Minh (VNSGN)

  • Minor congestion during Week 35.
  • Waiting time approximately 1-1.5 days.
  • Yard utilisation remains high at approximately 80-85%.

Vung Tau (VNVUT)

  • Congestion has stabilised.
  • GML waiting time approximately 0.5 day.
  • Yard utilisation has improved to approximately 75%, supporting improved operational efficiency.
